TWEENIES COURSE

The Tweenies Course is for dogs aged 4 to 5 months who have attended the club’s pre-school puppy course but who are still too young or immature to advance to the more formal beginners obedience course.

This course focuses on socialization activities and continues with basic obedience training in a fun environment.  Introduces the puppy to new equipment, new textures and new experiences; focusing; starts teaching the basics of walking on lead; rear-end awareness; balance.

The course cost includes single membership fee so if you do continue on to the beginners obedience course (within the same membership year) it will be at a reduced cost as you have already paid the membership fee.

Dogs must have had the third vaccination.

The club promotes reward based positive reinforcement training so you will need to bring some small, soft, tasty treats for your puppy.   The treats must be something extra special that you will only use when training the pup.

The general community who utilize Churchill Park together with the Tasmanian Dog Training Club Inc. (TDTC Inc.)  are already realizing  the positive benefits from a new Industrial Safety Fence project recently completed by the TDTC Inc. following a successful grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF).

TDTC Inc. President, Mrs Lyn Deitch, said the new industrial safety fencing would be important for the whole community who utilize Churchill Park as it focuses on the security of untrained off-lead dogs during education lessons and the safety of the general community members utilizing the park.

Mrs Deitch said the TDTC Inc, a community based volunteer organization,  was delighted to receive the TCF funding as it would have a positive impact on the TDTC Inc., its members, supporters and the general community.

“While we are pleased that the Tasmanian Community Fund could see the worth of the program, we believe that the fact that we were able to demonstrate the whole-of-community benefit, was a major factor in our gaining grant support,” Mrs Deitch said. “We believe we presented a good business case with clear and comprehensive budget protocols that highlighted the value of the new project to our club and the community as a whole”.

The independent community funding body, the Tasmanian Community Fund was established following the sale of the Trust bank in 1999 to give back to the community proceeds from the sale of a community asset. Since that time the TCF has allocated approximately $58.6 million to approximately 1700 statewide projects.

Introductory Tracking Course

– see under Activities for a full description of the dog sport of tracking

Next Course starting Sunday 21st March 2021

You can register interest in the course by emailing the club at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

For those who may be interested in tracking, a tracking demonstration and information session will be held at 11.00 a.m. Sunday 14th March 2021

Only one Introductory Tracking Course is held each year in March/April to prepare for the start of the tracking trial season in late May.  Because tracking takes place mainly in bush/paddock areas it is held in the colder months of the year when snakes are least active.

Class numbers are strictly limited to 8 dogs so you must register interest for this course.  Prepayment is required to confirm your place on the course.

The classes are held on Sunday mornings from 9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and run for 5 weeks unless otherwise stated.   If there is enough interest, the club may run an extra course starting at 11.00 a.m.

First week please arrive about 15 minutes early to complete enrolment.

Note: Dogs only compete at official TCA trials.  To be eligible your dog must be registered with the TCA and the handler must be a member of the TCA, if you are not a member check the TCA (Dogs Tasmania) website for the cost of annual membership and dog registration.

When tracking the dog is in harness and on lead so any dog is able to participate in the introductory tracking course as the handler always has full control over the dog.

For safety reasons you must wear sturdy enclosed shoes with grip as you may work in areas that are slippery – no thongs/sandals will be allowed.

The main aims of the introductory tracking course:

1.         To teach the dog to follow a selected trail which has been marked out by leaving scent on the trail

2.         Progress towards your dog being able to follow a specific scent to the exclusion of distractions and to clearly indicate any articles or property found on or next to the track

3.         Understand equipment and how to use appropriately

4.         Understand how to plot and lay tracks

Things to bring

·                     Fixed collar or a car harness if you have one (no slip chains)

·                     Lead – at least 750mm long up to 2 metres long

·                     10 to 20 small pieces of food (cook up some sausages and slice about 5mm thick or use Devon or similar)

·                     A reward for your dog (a favourite toy or small container of food)

·                     3 or 4 socks or gloves – to be used as articles for the dog to find

·                     A tether or something similar so you can leave your dog when you are laying a track – or have someone to hold your dog
